The following students were selected as members of the 2013 NEMO All-District Choir:
Debbie Eisenhoffer Lilly Rotte Nicole Webber Grace Maddox Austin Hoover Michael Marks Isaac Prior Hello everyone!! We are under two weeks before school starts again and there are a few things I'd like you to be aware of. First, I got married :) I tell you this so there is no confusion about the Pappas name; you do not have a new teacher, just a new last name to learn (easier to spell!). Second, please check that your schedule shows the correct choir you were placed in last May. If not, you will need to see the counselor to change your schedule accordingly. Third, music has been selected and ordered for this fall, so get those brains and voices ready! You can hear recordings of some of the music under the "suggested listening" tab. See you soon!
Congratulations to the following students for being selected for the Northeast MO All-District Choir 2012!!!!
Jordan Henry Austin Hoover Isaac Prior Elysse Williams It is truly hard to believe that another school year is right around the corner. After attending the Missouri Choral Directors Association annual convention in July, I decided it was about "that time" again to begin music preparations for the first concert. I am excited about the diversity of the pieces that all groups will be learning, and think there will be many fun moments along the way.
Aside from the excitement I have for the upcoming year in choir, I am looking forward to directing the music for the MHS fall musical, School House Rocks Live! On a personal note, I'm very much looking forward to getting married next summer :) This weekend MHS will be putting on their first musical in over 10 years! We are excited to be showing "Guys & Dolls Jr."!
The cast and crew has be working feverously the past few weeks to really pull everything together to put on a great show. Myself and our theater teacher are very proud of the hard work and dedication that the students have shown. There will be two opportunities to come see for yourself! Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30pm, or Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2:30pm. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. We hope to see you there!!! My, my, how time flies. I truly cannot believe that we are three days away from Thanksgiving break!!
I was very thrilled with how well ALL of the students performed at the Fall Concert in October. The positive feedback that myself and the students received from those in attendance was overwhelming, and well deserved. The amount of confidence the students performed with, and the ability to perform AS A GROUP was quite impressive for the first concert of the year. I am certain that each group has a lot of potential, and that this first concert really set the tone for how much these groups could improve over the course of the year if they work hard. We were lucky to have a wonderful Veteran's Day Assembly on November 11 to honor those that have served this country. Many students were shocked to discover our very own accompanist, my mother, is a veteran of the National Guard! Chamber Choir provided the singing of the National Anthem at the beginning of the assembly, and all choir students were included in the performance of "America, the Beautiful". Again, the response from those in attendance was a positive one. Music can always set the tone of an event, and even a simple melody-line, sung in unison, by a group of young people, can be a powerful thing. In the midst of 2nd quarter there tends to be a drop in motivation and effort by students (and teachers). It is one of the toughest parts of the school year, as everyone is getting run-down, and has a ton of things swarming their thoughts. Unfortunately, it is also one of the busiest times of the year in the music world, as so many community performance opportunities come into play. The most important thing to remember is, every moment of rehearsal counts. Whereas our concert is 4 calendar weeks away, we only have about 10 class rehearsals left due to all the out-of-building performances. Progress must be made at the end of each day, which requires focus, motivation, and dedication on everyone's part. Likewise, for Noteworthy, who has 7 performances before the actual concert, every performance is equally important; each audience deserves an equally outstanding performance. With that, I will be signing off for tonight. Here's to a successful (and busy) holiday season - Happy Thanksgiving!! Congratulations to Jordan Henry and Shelby Hobbs for being selected to the 2010 NEMO All-District Choir!!
Great job to everyone who auditioned. I'm very proud of the work that you've done! Chamber Choir - this is a GREAT recording. Sorry there's no visual, but please take the time to carefully listen. Notice the tall vowels and how evenly the parts are balanced. This is what we are trying to avoid. (Sorry Harding Fine Arts Choir.) The pitches are correct, the rhythms are correct, but the tone quality is not the most pleasant to listen to. You can hear a huge difference in the maturity of the sound. Some of the sections are "belting" the sound, causing the intonation to suffer. Please also look at the individuals' mouths as the camera zooms in - those are horizontal mouths. If they were vertical mouths, they would produce a "fuller", more "mature" sound. PS: both examples do say "hay-testh".... Goodness!! It's been off to the races so far this year. It's only the first week in September and the choir program is nearing its 3rd "performance" already! Chamber Choir did us proud singing the MHS Alma Mater in front of the whole school ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL; a group of wonderful willing volunteers sang the Alma Mater at the "State of the Community" last Tuesday; and this Friday ALL choir students 7th-12th grade will be performing "America the Beautiful" at half-time of the MHS football game.
All groups are making progress in learning their music for our first concert in October. I have to say that I'm quite impressed with Women's Choir's tone quality, Chamber Choir's quick-to-learn attitude, and Mixed Choir's ability to roll with the punches. I'm also very excited that this year, over 20 people expressed interest in auditioning for All-District Choir. That's about 3 times as many students who auditioned last year, so I'm hoping for 3 times as many to "make the cut". MAKE SURE YOU'RE PRACTICING YOUR AUDITION SOLOS!!!! At this moment: Favorite choir piece we're working on - Sing We and Chant It (CH) Favorite song on radio - Just the way You Are (Bruno Mars) Book I'm reading - The Last Song (Nicholas Sparks) |
